The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration began on 5 June 2021 the World Environment Day. The Decade, spanning from 2021 to 2030, aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems, and to restore them to achieve global goals.

The UN defines ecosystem restoration as "the process of halting and reversing degradation,resulting in improved ecosystem services and recovered biodiversity”.
